As Hurricane Irene heads up the U.S.'s East Coast, many people are nervous about the safety of their families—for many of us that means pets, too

Nearly 50 dogs were rescued off two separate properties in North Carolina - one in Pamlico County and another in Jones County. Both were suspected dogfighting operations.

54 dogs were rescued from a Bakersfield, Vermont property Tuesday. The Vermont State Police called in The Humane Society of the United States to help handle the dogs and bring them to safety. Now they'll get the medical treatment they need.

20 dogs were seized on a Gary, Indiana property after local authorities got a tip about an alleged dog fighting ring. The Humane Society of the United States was there to help rescue the dogs. Four suspects were taken into custody.

The HSUS's Animal Rescue Team was called in by Caldwell County Animal Control to assist in the rescue of approximately 300 dogs from a Hudson, North Carolina puppy mill.

The Humane Society of the United States rescued 700 cats that were living in deplorable conditions in Alachua County, Florida.

At a temporary shelter set up in Joplin, Missouri, people were able to retrieve their pets after massive tornadoes swept through the town. The HSUS and other animal protection organizations are there to help.

80 dogs were driven from a flooded Natchez, Mississippi to HSUS headquarters where they'll head to various adoption centers to get ready for a new home.
